Three people were killed after a small private plane crashed in a field near Mönchengladbach, in western Germany, on Sunday, police said.

The aircraft was a Cessna that had departed from Hilversum Airport, north of Utrecht in the Netherlands. According to German broadcaster WDR, shortly after entering German airspace, the plane lost altitude and crashed in the morning near the Erkelenz-Gerderath community.

Emergency services rushed to the crash site but confirmed that the three people on board had died.
The identities of the victims have not yet been made public by German authorities. An investigation has meanwhile been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
