An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison in the UK after hitting an 84-year-old pedestrian with a car, leaving him seriously injured and fleeing without providing assistance.
The decision was made by Durham Crown Court, which found Sonny Horsfall guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. In addition to the prison sentence, he was banned from driving for four years.

The incident took place on the evening of April 22 in Redcar, North Yorkshire. According to the investigation, Horsfall lost control of a recently purchased Audi A4, mounted the pavement and struck 84-year-old Eddie, who was returning home.
Security cameras captured the moment the car left the road and hit the elderly man, while the driver fled immediately after the collision. Prosecutors said the 18-year-old did not have a driving licence, had been disqualified from driving and the vehicle was uninsured.
The investigation also uncovered recordings on Horsfall’s phone showing him driving at high speed, making dangerous overtakes and running red lights.
In one of the videos, he can be heard saying: “I’ve just bought this beast,” while in another he says: “To hell with the red light.”
Two hours after the accident, the young man sent voice messages to a friend on Snapchat. In one of them, he said: “I don’t know what I hit… I’m eating pizza,” while in another he admitted that he suspected he may have seriously injured or killed someone.
Following the collision, the 84-year-old suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis, back and right leg. He spent several days in intensive care and, even after surgery, continues to face major mobility difficulties, uses walking aids and suffers from constant pain.
