The collapse occurred at one of Turkey’s most visited tourist destinations, which attracts visitors from around the world with its distinctive landscapes and historic monuments.

Formed over millions of years by volcanic activity and erosion, the “Fairy Chimneys” are distinguished by their tall, conical silhouettes, which resemble stone chimneys. They are among Cappadocia’s best-known symbols.

These formations are significant not only geologically, but also historically and culturally: over the centuries, residents carved homes, churches and monasteries into them.

Göreme National Park and the rock formations of Cappadocia have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985.
