Fuel station representatives say the wave of price increases is not over. In the past week alone, refineries raised the price of diesel by 11 to 12 cents and that of petrol by 6 to 7 cents. Part of this increase has not yet been passed on to consumers, but it is expected to appear at fuel pumps in the coming days.
The main concern is September 1, as the government’s current support measures expire on August 31. If they are not extended, the Federation of Fuel Retailers warns that petrol could reach €2 and 20 cents per litre, while diesel could rise to €2 and 25 cents.
This increase comes at a time when Greek households are still facing high living costs. Inflation in the country reached 3.4% in July, while energy and service costs continue to weigh on household budgets. The impact of fuel prices, however, is not limited to motorists.
Higher diesel prices increase transport costs and could push up the prices of food and other products. The government is assessing the possibility of extending the diesel subsidy beyond the end of August. Meanwhile, attention has turned to the Thessaloniki International Fair, which takes place in early September, where Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to present a new package of relief measures for families, pensioners, the middle class and small businesses.
