Drought and Heat Put the Netherlands on Alert, Citizens Asked to Save Water

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has announced that the Netherlands is officially facing water shortages, as drought and high temperatures have worsened the situation.

Following a recommendation by the National Water Distribution Coordination Committee, LCW, the country has been placed at the second water shortage alert level. Authorities and utility companies are assessing new alternatives for managing and distributing water reserves, although no specific measures have yet been announced.

At the beginning of July, the Netherlands moved to the first warning level over a potential water shortage. The transition to the second level comes as river flows continue to decline due to a lack of rainfall and the prolonged heatwave. The third level would mean declaring a full-scale water crisis.

The Dutch government stresses that the drinking water supply remains stable, but has urged citizens to avoid waste and use water sparingly.

According to authorities, the first effects of the water shortage are expected to emerge in river transport, agriculture and industry. Falling river levels are making navigation more difficult, forcing vessels to carry less cargo to avoid becoming stranded. Meanwhile, factories may face restrictions on the use and discharge of cooling water, as lower river levels increase water temperatures.

In some areas, streams and canals have dried up completely. For the coming months, authorities are preparing further measures, including the use of pumps and dams, aimed at ensuring the drinking water supply.
