Bomb attack at a Gaza university kills three and injures eight students

A bomb attack at the Islamic University of Gaza killed three guards and injured eight students, according to Palestinian sources. The Israeli military said it had “diverted” the strike, which was targeting a Hamas member, but did not clarify whether the victims were hit by mistake.

AFP sources reported that a drone struck the university, which is located in the northern part of the enclave.

Photographs taken by AFP show Palestinians carrying the wounded on stretchers to hospital, while relatives kneel beside the bodies and mourn the victims.

The enclave’s Ministry of Education said some of the injured students, who were at the university attending classes, were in critical condition. It also condemned the world’s silence in the face of attacks on students and universities.

“Ten students and teachers have been killed in the past ten days,” the ministry said, adding that 95% of university buildings had been damaged during the three-year war between Israel and Hamas.

In a post on X, the Israeli military said it had carried out a strike against “a terrorist from Hamas’s military wing in the Gaza City area.” It said the strike was “diverted” after civilians were detected. The military added that the incident was under investigation but did not say whether the victims at the university had been hit unintentionally.

Gaza’s Civil Defence, which is run by Hamas, also reported five people killed in other parts of the enclave. Three died in Khan Yunis, one in Deir al-Balah, and the fifth was killed by Israeli fire in the northwest of Gaza City.

Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire that took effect on October 10, 2025, after two years of war. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run Ministry of Health, more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed this year. The United Nations considers the ministry’s figures credible.
