The couple have been identified as Bujar Meco, 53, and his wife, Esma Meco, 44, both originally from Gramsh. They had three children.
The incident occurred in the Rhodope region and remains under investigation by the Greek authorities. Esma Meco was taken to hospital in serious condition, but her injuries proved fatal. Following the attack, the 53-year-old attempted suicide and was also hospitalized, where he remains under medical care and supervision.
Greek media reports differ over how he attempted to take his own life. Some say he stabbed himself, while others report that he drank diesel fuel.
According to preliminary information, the Greek authorities were alerted by one of the couple’s children. Investigators are also examining problems the spouses are believed to have had in the past.
In early 2022, in Heraklion, Crete, Esma Meco had reported her husband for making threats. At the time, Bujar Meco was arrested by police in connection with a domestic violence case.
The investigation is continuing to fully determine how the crime occurred, the motives behind it, and the circumstances leading up to it.
