According to Portuguese media, testimony from the victim’s friends presents a different version of the cause of the conflict. They said the clash began when Mendes tried to intervene to stop a woman from being harassed in a public place.
The friends described the Portuguese tourist as the first person to react to the situation and attempt to put an end to it.
Sokrat Vata, the main suspect in the killing, is believed to have been among the people harassing the woman. The confrontation between the Albanians and Luís Mendes’s group continued afterward, until the parties reached the entrance queue for a resort in the city. According to local police, the crime may have taken place there.
