An image taken in 2014 in Venice, California, showed a scene that looked as though it had been taken from a thriller: a woman crouched on the roof of her home while, just a few meters behind her, a man climbed out of a window to pursue her.

The protagonist of the incident was Melora Rivera, a 29-year-old actress and screenwriter. She had been living in Venice for only three weeks when a burglar broke into her home.
The man who followed her onto the roof was Christian Hicks, a homeless man with a long criminal history. He had torn down the home’s front door and, after entering, followed Rivera to the bedroom. When the actress escaped through the window and climbed onto the roof, Hicks did the same.
The photograph was taken by a local blogger who saw the scene while Rivera was on the phone with emergency services. Its publication in the media caused the image to spread throughout the United States and then abroad.
“I felt as if I had been thrown into a thriller. It was terrifying, and every instinct told me to get away,” Rivera recalled.
The actress said it all began while she was asleep and woke up to the sound of someone trying to open the front door. Her room was in the attic, so the noise reached her there.
At first, she checked her phone, thinking that perhaps an acquaintance was letting her know they were stopping by for a visit.
When she went downstairs and looked out the window, Rivera saw a man walking away and talking to himself. Believing the danger had passed, she even considered taking a shower to get ready for work, but ultimately decided to return to bed.
Just 15 minutes later, the man appeared again.
This time, he began slamming his shoulder against the door, trying to force it open. From the bedroom, Rivera could see the gap in the door widening with every blow.
“He wasn’t stopping. He seemed determined to continue until he got inside,” she said.
Rivera immediately called 911. As she was giving the operator her address, a large section of the door collapsed, and she saw Hicks’s hand reach inside to open it.
Convinced that she had no more time, the 29-year-old opened one of the bedroom’s low windows, removed the screen and crawled out onto the roof.
“I crawled through the window, literally. The moment the burglar set foot in my house, I set foot on the roof,” Rivera recalled. However, even that move was not enough to escape him.
Hicks climbed up to the bedroom and followed her out through the same window. Rivera recalled that as she climbed onto the roof, she saw his head appear in the window.
“That was when I realized he was on the roof with me.” It was precisely this scene that was captured on camera and later became one of the most widely discussed images of the incident.
A passerby who noticed what was happening stopped a police car and alerted the authorities. Throughout the ordeal, Rivera remained on the line with 911.
Within minutes, police officers and firefighters arrived in the area. The firefighters placed a ladder to help Rivera get down from the roof, while the officers persuaded Hicks to leave and then arrested him.
According to the actress, the confrontation lasted about 30 minutes.
“There were six police officers at the scene, a helicopter was flying overhead and people were watching from the sidewalk. Meanwhile, I was trapped on a roof without any pants on. It was crazy,” she recalled.
Rivera said that during those moments she had even considered jumping from the roof if that were the only way to escape her pursuer.
“If the police had not arrived quickly, there’s no telling what might have happened. I was even thinking that perhaps I should jump from the roof,” she said.
Even after the incident, the actress continued imagining different scenarios for how that day could have ended.
“I wasn’t trying to act in an episode of Law & Order. I didn’t want to die before the closing credits appeared,” Rivera said.
Christian Hicks was arrested immediately after the 2014 incident. According to court records cited by the Daily Mail, he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and was sentenced to three years in prison.
After his release from prison, however, Hicks returned to criminal activity.
In 2018, he was arrested again and faced charges of burglary and sexual assault. After reaching an agreement with prosecutors, he received a sentence of less than one year in prison.
The most serious charges against him were brought in 2021, when Hicks was arrested for offenses including rape and kidnapping.
The legal proceedings lasted several years, and in 2023 Hicks was sentenced to 37 years in prison. According to information cited in reports, he may seek parole in September 2043.
