On Wednesday, August 12, parts of Europe and the Northern Hemisphere will have the opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse, one of the most spectacular astronomical events of recent years.

For several minutes, the Moon will position itself precisely between Earth and the Sun. For observers within the narrow corridor where its shadow falls, the solar disk will be completely covered.
The event has particular significance on the continent, as it will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999. Thousands of tourists and astronomy enthusiasts are expected to travel to the areas included in what is known as the “path of totality.”
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow over part of the planet’s surface.
During the total phase, people in the right location will see the Moon completely conceal the bright part of the Sun. Daylight will fade suddenly, the sky will resemble twilight, and the Sun’s corona will appear around the dark lunar disk.
The possibility of this phenomenon is linked to a remarkable coincidence involving sizes and distances. The Sun’s diameter is approximately 400 times larger than the Moon’s, but the star is also about 400 times farther from Earth. As a result, when viewed from our planet, the two disks appear to be almost the same size.
The path of the total eclipse on August 12 will begin across northern Russia, Greenland and Iceland, then cross the Atlantic and reach the Iberian Peninsula.
Spain will be among the European countries with the most favorable conditions for observing the event. A small area in northeastern Portugal will also fall within the path of totality.
In Spain, the eclipse corridor will extend across most of the country’s north and east, reaching as far as the Balearic Islands.
The area where the phenomenon will be visible as a partial eclipse will be significantly larger. It will cover most of Europe, Canada, several northern regions of the United States, as well as parts of northwestern Africa.
The total phase in Spain will be relatively brief because the eclipse will occur close to the horizon and shortly before sunset.
In the Burgos region, for example, total coverage will last about 1 minute and 44 seconds. The entire phenomenon, including the period from the beginning to the end of the partial phases, will last approximately 1 hour and 47 minutes.
Along the eclipse’s entire path, the longest period of totality will reach about 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
Why are total eclipses so rare?
Globally, solar eclipses are not considered particularly unusual. Their rarity lies in the fact that a specific location must be positioned precisely within the narrow corridor where total coverage occurs.
Since the lunar shadow covers only a limited area of Earth, a city or region may have to wait many years before experiencing another total solar eclipse.
However, Spain is about to experience an unusual astronomical period. Another total solar eclipse, on August 2, 2027, will pass across southern Spain, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Alongside the interest generated by the spectacle, specialists are warning of the risk of eye damage. Looking directly at the Sun without protective equipment can cause serious harm to vision.
During the partial phases, it is essential to use special eclipse glasses certified for the purpose or safe solar filters. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide the necessary protection, regardless of how dark they may be.
Protective glasses may be removed temporarily only by people within the path of totality, and only during the interval when the Moon has completely covered the bright solar disk. As soon as even the smallest part of the Sun reappears, protection must be put back on immediately.
Additional safety measures are also necessary when using telescopes, binoculars or cameras, as these devices require specially designed solar filters.
