Berisha speaks after tensions in the National Council: I gave only one instruction, no one is denied the right to speak

Moments before the vote counting process began in the Democratic Party, chairman Sali Berisha made a statement to journalists. He assessed that the group of candidates proposed for leadership roles within the political force stands out for its outstanding composition and significant inclusion of young people.

Berisha stressed that this team surpasses all previous party formations in terms of professional background, experience, and competence. According to him, today’s list includes personalities with publications at the most prestigious international levels and individuals with a rich background in political activity. He added that never before has such a complete formation been presented, and that the structure respects the assembly’s guideline to strengthen the presence of the younger generation and women, achieving an optimal balance of all DP’s potentials.

Referring to the voices of dissatisfaction, he described them as completely normal. “Everyone has the right to freely express their opinion. The vote is held with two candidacies, secretly, and the alternatives placed before the Council are, in their qualities, incomparable with previous elected ones,” he declared.

Asked about the reorganization of branch leaders in districts, the Democratic leader replied that this is an ongoing process that will proceed in parallel with the situation. He clarified that any changes will be announced only after the voting results are out.

Further, Berisha commented on the heated debate during the National Council session, where there was a moment of tension with member Ilirjana Kuçana. He explained that to minimize lobbying as much as possible, although it cannot be entirely eliminated, a certain reserve had been placed on the distribution of information. Berisha admitted that he had given a clear instruction not to make it public earlier, and that it remains a wonder that someone learned about it in the hall, although there may be isolated cases.

Speaking about the incident with the MP, he stated that she is completely free to speak and that it is not up to him to deny her any right. Berisha revealed that he had responded to her request in the morning, stressing that everything must be done in accordance with the statute and that if she wishes to submit a resolution, it is her right. He underlined that it is not within his competence to allow actions outside the rules and that his main obligation is not to deny others the right to speak.

Finally, Berisha also commented on the transparency of the process, stating that the result will be announced publicly in front of the cameras. He recalled that his individual vote remains secret, while stressing that the chairman’s referendum is of interest to all of Albania and that the other one has executed the vote since 2009 until now.
