Alarm in Serbia as African swine fever breaks out, 11,000 pigs to be culled

Serbian authorities have confirmed a new outbreak of African swine fever at a large farm in the Vojvodina region, launching the process of culling around 11,000 pigs to curb the spread of the virus.

The news was announced by Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Dragan Glamociic, who told public broadcaster RTS that the virus had been confirmed at a farm in the village of Hrtkovci.

According to him, the planned culling process of nearly 11,000 pigs began today as part of emergency measures to control and isolate the disease outbreak. Vojvodina is the region with the largest pig population in Serbia.

African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease with a high mortality rate for pigs, but it is not transmitted to humans.

According to official data, the disease has been identified in around 70 countries worldwide, including 16 European states. In the region, cases of African swine fever have also been reported in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary and Romania.
