Makfire Kastrati remembered her daughter, Diana Kastrati, in a Facebook post, expressing her grief over the loss and her disappointment with the institutions that, she says, failed to protect her.
She wrote that she had been without Diana for 15 years, 6 months and 12 days, and criticized the institutional inaction that, according to her, preceded the murder. Makfire Kastrati said her daughter had sought a protection order, but the responsible institutions had failed to take the necessary measures.

“For 15 years, the state failed to stop the killer,” she wrote, asking where the institutions were when Diana needed protection. Her mother also expressed disappointment over the lack of institutional accountability, saying that not enough had been done in her daughter’s case.
She ended her post with the words: “Your name will never be forgotten, my heart, Diana, until the black earth covers me.”
Diana Kastrati was 27 years old when she was shot dead on May 18, 2011, in Pristina. According to court documents, she was shot in the neck. Her former partner, A.J., was suspected of the murder. They had lived together for more than ten years and had a daughter.
According to a 2013 judgment by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, Diana filed a lawsuit on January 17, 2011, to dissolve her non-marital union with A.J. because their relationship had deteriorated. She later moved with her daughter to her parents’ home.
After alleged threats against her and her daughter, Diana applied for an emergency protection order at the Municipal Court in Pristina on April 26 of that year. The law in force required the court to issue a decision within 24 hours, but her application received no response. Diana was murdered 22 days later.
The court’s inaction later became the subject of a lengthy legal battle launched by her parents, Gëzim and Makfire Kastrati. On November 3, 15 years after Diana’s murder, the Basic Prosecution in Pristina filed an indictment against A.J.
