Calls to burn Democratic Party headquarters: AMA fines TV station for inciting violence

The Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA) has fined a TV station after it broadcast a call to set fire to the Democratic Party headquarters, known as SHQUP, during a televised debate. The remark came during a discussion about students breaking into the party’s headquarters in Shkodër. One participant said: “They were right to do it. They should set that one on fire, too. They should set SHQUP here on fire as well.”

The statement aired on television was made public in an animated video posted on the Instagram page of AMA’s chairwoman. The materials do not identify the TV station; they only highlight the violation.

The decision to fine TV stations for inciting violence has prompted mixed reactions in recent days, including accusations that AMA’s measures could undermine freedom of speech.

In the videos posted on the chairwoman’s page, the authority cites Law No. 97/2013, as amended, which prohibits broadcasts that justify violence and requires media outlets to uphold ethical standards and refrain from airing programs that could incite criminal acts.
