Storm “Agneta” causes flooding on Greek islands, more rain expected

Storm “Agneta” has brought flooding and damage to Rhodes, one of the areas hardest hit by the severe weather. Footage filmed by residents shows floodwaters from heavy rain sweeping dozens of cars along the island’s streets. Problems have also been reported on Samos and Kalymnos and in central Greece.

In Arhangelos, in eastern Rhodes, the river burst its banks overnight after about 17 hours of uninterrupted rain. The flooding caused extensive damage to roads and infrastructure.

Figures so far show that at least 60 vehicles have been swept away or damaged, while dozens of homes and businesses have been flooded. Some residents were forced to climb onto the roofs of their homes. Firefighters carried out dozens of operations to evacuate people who were stranded.

During the night and in the early hours of the morning, Civil Protection sent repeated alerts through the 112 emergency number. Residents and tourists were asked to travel only when absolutely necessary. Schools in the worst-hit areas remained closed.

Vehicle traffic has also been halted at several locations in southern Rhodes. Authorities are on alert, with heavy rain and storms forecast across the Dodecanese during the day. In the same area, another storm that brought rain and flooding killed a 62-year-old man three weeks ago.

According to weather forecasters, “Agneta” will continue to affect Greece. Heavy rain and storms are expected in the same areas during the afternoon and overnight, as the system moves toward the Ionian islands and western Greece. On Tuesday, the severe weather is also expected to reach Central and Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the northern and eastern Aegean islands.
