She described her father as a man who radiated justice, intelligence, vision, gentleness and a love of beauty, and emphasized that his life was a great historical, political, social and cultural achievement.
Valbona Zeneli also recalled her parents’ love and devotion. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and she said that she and her family were fortunate to grow up in a home filled with love, integrity and dedication.
In her speech, she also highlighted Bashkim Zeneli’s strong character. She said he never bowed to ignorance or servility, either during communism or in the years that followed.
His pen, she stressed, obeyed no one, while he always respected ordinary people and challenged those in power.
Excerpt from Valbona Zeneli’s speech:
You are a guiding light, one of those who radiate justice, intelligence, vision, gentleness and a love of beauty. Our dearest, your life has been a historical, political, social and cultural achievement, but it was also a life shared with your love and your beauty—with Mom, your angel, as you called her.
You never bowed to ignorance or servility—not only under communism, but even today. Your pen never obeyed anyone. You respected ordinary people and challenged those in power.
As a diplomat, you built bridges. You supported Albanians wherever you served, and the door to our home was always open. You paved many paths for Albania’s integration into Europe. You categorically rejected any act that held people hostage to corruption and clientelism. You slept peacefully and began each day singing.
