A technical problem is the leading theory behind the crash of an Italian forces helicopter in Bosnia, in which four people on board lost their lives. However, authorities warn that it is too early to reach a final conclusion and that determining the causes could take several days.
Immediately after the accident, Italy’s Ministry of Defense focused on confirming the casualty figures and notifying the victims’ families, so they would not learn the tragic news from the Italian or Bosnian media.

The pilots were pulled alive from the helicopter, while 11 injured people are receiving medical treatment. Representatives of the Italian government have described their rescue as “almost a miracle.”
Meanwhile, a more specific hypothesis about the accident has been circulating on social media. Helicopter experts, after reviewing a video posted on Facebook from Bosnia, noted that one of the two engines may have seized or may have changed its direction of rotation.
The footage and the brief sequences recorded before the crash indicate that the helicopter may have begun spinning in an unusual and uncontrolled manner. Such an incident is rare for the CH-47F Chinook, an advanced-technology helicopter manufactured by the American company Boeing in cooperation with the Italian company Leonardo.
Technical data indicate that the helicopter, which crashed yesterday afternoon in Bosnia, was flying in relatively normal conditions: cloudy weather and wind speeds of less than 5 kilometers per hour. In other words, no unusual or difficult atmospheric conditions had been reported.
Preliminary information was relayed to Rome by the EUFOR command, the European military mission for stabilizing Bosnia, which is led by Italy this year.
Not all the people who died on board were military personnel; two of them were members of the Red Cross staff.
Italy has more than 200 personnel engaged as part of Eurofor, carrying out various operational duties on the ground and in the air, including aerial surveillance and military intelligence.
