The strike was called by the USB union and affects public- and private-sector workers, as well as healthcare staff. Hospitals will maintain essential services and emergency care. Various mobilizations have taken place in cities from Rome and Turin to Trieste and Bologna.
In Bologna, students have blocked the entrances to several schools. Meanwhile, around 500 protesters have gathered near the port of Trieste, holding banners against war and rearmament.
More than 20,000 people are expected to participate in Rome. To ensure the peaceful conduct of the gatherings and prevent clashes, the authorities have deployed additional police forces.
The initiative has also led to tensions between the government and the trade unions. Transport Minister Matteo Salvini called for the strike to be postponed, but the organizers refused and confirmed the protest.
In Milan, the authorities have raised the security level, expressing concern about possible incidents and acts of vandalism during the demonstrations.
Trade unions, a security detail organized by the protesters, and large numbers of police officers and Carabinieri are expected to be present at the main march. This presence is intended to prevent groups from attempting to turn Friday in Milan into another day of violence and clashes in the streets.
