Hungary, Slovenia, Latvia, Colombia and the Czech Republic also lined up against the resolution.

A year earlier, the resolution had received the support of 165 countries, while seven voted against it and 12 abstained. This year’s vote took place after an intensified diplomatic effort by Washington to persuade more states to oppose the document or refrain from taking a position.

The resolution is not legally binding and does not oblige Washington to change its sanctions policy. Nevertheless, it reflects the position of the international community on the embargo./Telegrafi/
