This Thursday, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha launched a barrage of accusations against the majority during his speech in Parliament, saying that the police had used barbaric violence against young Albanians. He added that the Socialist Party lawmakers, not the students, deserved the fractured skulls and broken bones, as well as the tear gas.
“Dear citizens, during the week and the days we have just experienced, Tirana witnessed the greatest acts of barbarity against young Albanians. On the streets of Tirana, young people’s bones were broken, their skulls were split open, and the most brutal means were used against them. These lawmakers are more criminal than those who split skulls and break bones. They deserve the tear gas, rubber bullets, broken bones, rubber bullets,” he said.

That was enough for Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi to cut off his microphone, saying that these statements amounted to calls for violence. He said that Berisha would not be allowed to speak again for the rest of the day. Peleshi then announced that the session would be suspended for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, Berisha refused to leave the parliamentary podium and went live on his Facebook page.
