The issue of the agreement on Russian oil has also caused friction within the ranks of Republicans who support Donald Trump in the United States.

Representative Brian Fitzpatrick said he would seek a vote in the House of Representatives on a bill banning the purchase of oil from Russia. The initiative runs counter to President Donald Trump’s decision to ease restrictions on Russian crude oil exports. Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the House Ukraine Caucus, said he intends to introduce the bipartisan “Ronald Reagan: Peace Through Strength” bill with the support of Republican Representative Don Bacon.
The bill could be brought to a vote without passing through the relevant committee or receiving approval from House leadership if the petition collects at least 218 signatures. However, the time available poses an obstacle, while the initiative would also have to be approved by the Senate. Other Republicans, including Michael McCaul and Senator Lisa Murkowski, warned that easing sanctions would reduce pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and help finance the Kremlin’s war machine.
Republicans urged Trump to use his authority to impose tariffs on major buyers of Russian energy. These measures are provided for in a law passed in September concerning sanctions against Russia and Iran. Meanwhile, Democrats called for the implementation of the 2022 law banning imports of Russian oil into the United States, except in cases where Russia meets certain conditions, including withdrawing from Ukraine and respecting its sovereignty.
Tom Malinowski, a former U.S. official, urged Democratic leaders to use expedited procedures to challenge the Trump administration’s decision.
