Five British men in their 20s were initially detained on suspicion of offences linked to explosives. They were later suspected of terrorist offences.
The vans were spotted early on Sunday, triggering a major security incident near the base, which is operated by the US military.
On Monday, the five detainees were released on bail. Police described this as an “investigative decision”, supported by the experience and strategy followed during the investigation.
The incident occurred after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it was clear that a “foreign actor” had been involved.
According to Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, the authorities intervened on Sunday morning after receiving “a range of information”. This included a call from a member of the public who reported “several vehicles behaving suspiciously” near the base.
Taylor said police aimed to complete the “investigative scenes” by Wednesday. Meanwhile, investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident.
