Kurti: Agreement reached cannot avert elections without resolving the presidency

Albin Kurti, who serves as acting prime minister, stressed that the latest political agreement does not guarantee that early elections will be avoided. According to him, the process remains deadlocked without securing the votes needed to elect the country’s new president.

He explained that the election of the president requires the presence of two-thirds of lawmakers in the Assembly, stressing that the participation of deputies who support the agreement alone is not enough; additional votes are also needed.

“We already have a political agreement, but it must also provide us with the numbers needed to avoid new elections,” Kurti said before the start of the constitutive session. He added that without electing the president, neither the Assembly nor the government can stop the country from heading to the ballot box.

Kurti also praised the convening of the constitutive session by presiding officer Avni Dehari, describing it as a step that requires a positive response from their side precisely because of the agreement reached.
