Will you resign?” Rama called for all institution heads to step down, Dashnor Sula surprises with his answer: I have faced interference from both the left and…

Albania’s Inspector General, Dashnor Sula, has commented on the latest developments in the country, the protests and Prime Minister Edi Rama’s call for the resignation of more than 130 public administration officials. Appearing on the programme “Breaking” on Top News with journalist Jetona Koçibelli, Sula was asked whether he would agree to step down if the same request were made of him.

He began by expressing regret over the situation in the country, focusing on the incidents and injuries during the protests. “As a citizen, a parent and a civil servant, I regret the situation our country finds itself in, including the injuries and problems during the protests. It is not normal for protesters to be injured or for police officers to be injured while carrying out their duties,” Sula said.

Asked directly whether he would resign, the Inspector General stressed that he had been heading the institution for only seven months and had faced numerous problems during that time, but had also achieved tangible results thanks to Prime Minister Rama’s support. He said the institution he leads was undergoing improvements, with work under way to equip inspectors with smart body cameras and conduct online inspections at customs checkpoints.

“I have been in office for 7 months, having been appointed Inspector General of the Republic of Albania. It is a very, extraordinarily difficult job. I found very serious problems and, together with my close team, thanks to the Prime Minister’s support, I have also achieved tangible results,” he stated.

Sula acknowledged that many problems remained in the institution, which has around 2,100 inspectors, but stressed that his personal and professional integrity remained beyond question. He said he would under no circumstances accept bribes over appointments or disciplinary measures, despite interference that, according to him, comes from representatives of both the right and the left.

“There is no chance that a businessman or anyone else could bribe me over appointments, disciplinary measures and so on. I face interference from both the right and the left. I have had strong support from the Prime Minister,” the Inspector General stressed.

Despite repeated questions from the journalist, Sula did not give a direct answer as to whether he would resign if asked to do so by the head of government. Instead, he highlighted the support he has received from Rama, stressing that the Prime Minister had taken a principled stance on the problems facing the institution he leads.
