U.S. Senate narrowly confirms Todd Blanche as U.S. attorney general

Todd Blanche, former defense attorney for President Donald Trump, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as attorney general of the United States.

His appointment was confirmed by a vote of 50-49, with Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voting against his nomination.

Senator Bill Cassidy cast the deciding vote. A day earlier, Cassidy had said that Blanche was the best choice President Trump could have made for the position.

Blanche has served as acting attorney general since last April, but his nomination has raised concerns among both Democrats and Republicans.

The debate has focused particularly on his independence and his ability to act independently of President Trump.

Critics have also accused him of enabling the White House to exert considerable influence over the Department of Justice during his time in office.
