Speaking about the project, Shakira said football has the power to bring together people from different cultures and backgrounds.
“Football is something that brings together so many cultures and people from different walks of life,” she said.
The artist added that a World Cup song should reflect the emotions and passion experienced by fans around the world.
The list also includes “DNA (More Than A Game),” performed by Andrea Bocelli, David Guetta, EJAE and Megan Thee Stallion, recorded in English, Italian and Korean.
“It is a very joyful song. I think it brings luck,” Bocelli told the Associated Press.
Among the classic football anthems, AP also highlights Ricky Martin’s “La Copa de la Vida (The Cup of Life),” one of the best-known songs in World Cup history, as well as Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup. According to the Associated Press, these songs remain among the best examples of blending local sounds with global appeal.
The selection also includes songs representing the fan identities of Spain and Argentina. For Spain, the chosen tracks are Raphael’s “Mi Gran Noche” and “La Roja Baila,” the Spanish national team’s anthem for the 2016 European Championship.
Meanwhile, Argentina is represented by “La Cumbia de los Trapos” by the group Yerba Brava and “Matador” by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. The list also includes the modern hit “Dumbai” by the duo Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso, which brings a more contemporary feel to the tournament’s musical atmosphere.
