The protesters forced him to return inside, declaring that MPs would not be allowed to leave before the Law on Specialized Courts was passed.
The incident was condemned by the leader of Self-Determination’s parliamentary group, Arbërie Nagavci, who described the way the VV MP was treated as unacceptable and shameful.
Nagavci stressed that invoking the KLA cannot be used as a justification for violence, especially against someone whose family has paid in blood for Kosovo’s freedom.
“No one gains the right to commit violence by invoking the KLA, let alone against a man whose family has paid in blood the price of Kosovo’s freedom,” Nagavci said.
The leader of Self-Determination’s parliamentary group described the protesters’ treatment of Prof. Dr. Fahrush Rexhepi as unacceptable and shameful.
She said that images of protesters forcibly grabbing and pushing an MP of the Republic of Kosovo do not represent the exercise of the democratic right to protest. According to her, citizens have the right to protest, criticize and demand accountability, but not to use physical force against an elected representative.
Nagavci emphasized that the incident is even more serious because of the MP’s stature, as he is a university professor and a doctor of history.
She recalled that Rexhepi comes from a family that made a major contribution to Kosovo’s freedom. His brother, Njazi Rexhepi, is a Martyr of the Nation and a member of the 138th “Agim Ramadani” Brigade, and he fell in the Battle of Koshar.
The MP’s other brother, Jonuz Rexhepi, is a war veteran and a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Nagavci called on protesters to bear in mind Fahrush Rexhepi’s background and his family’s history before abducting, pushing or publicly humiliating him.
According to her, no one can gain the right to commit violence by invoking the KLA, let alone against a person whose family has paid in blood the price of Kosovo’s freedom.
She added that the freedom for which the martyrs fell was not won so that MPs of the Republic of Kosovo could be forcibly detained in its name.
“This is not defending the values of the war. This is disrespecting them,” Nagavci concluded.
