Rama described the protesters’ behavior as disgusting, singling out the case of Socialist MP Iris Luarasi.

Rama addressed those who have portrayed the obstruction of MPs as an expression of disagreement, stressing that his Albanian colleagues, from the right to the left, faced verbal abuse, physical violence, eggs and stones as they tried to reach their workplace.

According to him, it is shameful for such behavior to be presented as democratic opposition. The prime minister also emphasized that a respected member of Parliament, a distinguished academic and a well-known advocate for women’s rights, was abused while trying to enter her workplace, adding that this was not even the worst thing the Albanian MPs were forced to endure that day. Rama asked whether democracy’s critics had anything to say about this form of disagreement and whether their concern for democracy stopped when confronted with unpleasant facts. He went on to call for Albania not to be drawn into this debate, describing the country as genuinely free and more democratic than their narrow-minded politics. According to Rama, Albania does not deserve to become a subject of discussion for mediocre people who trade facts for free political engagement.
