For more than a month, the mass protests taking place in Albania against Prime Minister Edi Rama have begun to attract growing attention in the international media as well.
An article by the American outlet “Democracy Now” has been devoted to what is now known worldwide as the “Flamingo Revolution,” highlighting the background of the situation that has driven citizens into the streets.

According to “Democracy Now,” the spark that ignited the revolt in Tirana was a project to build a luxury resort in an area of high ecological sensitivity. The article says that the “Flamingo Revolution,” so named because of the impact it is expected to have on migratory birds, began as an environmental protest but later turned into broad anger at the entire political system, threatening to bring down Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government.
To better explain the scale of this scandal, “Democracy Now” interviewed two members of the “Together Movement” party, who described the billion-dollar project as a corrupt cover. According to them, the planned resort amounts to “a money-laundering operation” and exposes a much deeper degradation that has affected institutions and the way Albania is governed.
At the end of the article, the American journalists also quote trade union organizer in Albania Bora Mema, a member of the Together Movement, who reiterated her determination not to back down until the objective is fully achieved. “The protests will continue, and people are very determined,” Mema told “Democracy Now,” showing that civic resistance in Albania has now broken through censorship and is being followed with great interest even across the ocean.
