The free trade agreement between Kosovo and the EFTA member states enters fully into force today, on 1 October 2026. This group includes Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein, reports KosovaPress.

As a sign of the start of the agreement’s implementation, the first package bound for the EFTA market will depart today at 13:00 from the Dheu i Bardhë border crossing point.
The procedures for submitting proof of origin and customs declarations for goods that meet the criteria for preferential treatment have also been determined.
Trade cooperation between Kosovo and the European Free Trade Association, established in 1960, is governed by a comprehensive free trade agreement.
Talks on this agreement between Kosovo and the four EFTA member states began in June 2022. Negotiations concluded successfully in September 2024, and the document was officially signed on 22 January 2025.
The agreement aims to liberalize economic exchanges and create stable long-term trade rules. Among the main areas are the elimination of tariff barriers and the facilitation of trade in industrial and processed agricultural products.
The provisions also call for simplifying technical, sanitary and phytosanitary requirements to reduce border barriers, as well as environmental protection and alignment with WTO standards.
EFTA has one of the world’s most extensive networks of free trade agreements. It covers more than 40 states beyond its borders, including Kosovo.
