In September, the average consumption basket for a four-member family cost 58,117 denars

Average monthly consumption expenses for a four-member family reached 58,117 denars in September. This amount was 358 denars lower than in August, while compared with January, it marked an increase of 1,736 denars. The meeting also addressed issues related to non-working days, Sunday work and payment for working hours, but no concrete proposals have been announced so far.

Durmishi said that the ministry’s calculation aims to provide a transparent, verifiable overview based on statistical data on household expenses.

“Our aim is not to present a lower figure, but to ensure a verifiable, transparent and statistics-based overview of household expenses. For September 2026, the Ministry’s average consumption budget reached 58,117 denars for a four-member family. Compared with August, it decreased by 358 denars, or 0.6 percent. Compared with January, however, it increased by 1,736 denars, or 3.1 percent. We are concerned about changes over time, as well as pressure on the household budget,” Durmishi said.

According to him, the calculation is based on 11 categories and includes 101 food products. The process uses data from the State Statistical Office for the three cities, prices collected in 23 markets for fruit and vegetables, as well as prices from five major chains and three regional commercial areas.

The minister explained that the most noticeable changes were recorded in food and beverages, clothing and footwear, education, housing and utility expenses. For the maintenance and hospitality categories, as well as recreation and culture, the ministry’s calculation is the highest.

Speaking about inspections, Durmishi said that regular checks by the State Market Inspectorate had so far found no increase in trade margins.

“We have stressed several times that inspections verify traders’ margins. If checks show that margins have increased by more than 10 or 15 percent, administrative measures are imposed, while, as in the previous period, measures to limit them are adopted. The inspections conducted so far, which take place every three months, have not identified abuses of this nature,” Durmishi said.
