More than 80,000 euros in fines have been imposed during the period so far on legal entities that have failed to act responsibly in handling waste, said Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski.

According to him, the fight against illegal dumps would be more effective with the establishment of a municipal police force. Gjorgjievski said that Skopje’s municipalities are also involved in this process and that coordinated cooperation could produce better results.
Speaking about the ban on dumping waste after 10 p.m., he explained that the City Inspectorate operates within its powers but faces limitations because of the way the current system functions.
The mayor of Skopje assessed that a small number of irresponsible citizens and companies are responsible for this problem. As he said, they leave old furniture and other waste near containers, in parks and along boulevards.
Gjorgjievski stressed that some citizens consider paying a fine more worthwhile than properly taking large waste to “Drisla.” For this reason, the City intends to offer all Skopje residents the opportunity to dispose of large waste free of charge once a week.
