Michael Gahler, a German MEP and foreign policy spokesman for the European People’s Party (EPP) Group, strongly criticized the recent protests taking place in Albania.
Gahler, who last year led the European Parliament delegation on its election observation mission in the country, said public discontent was tied to a situation that, in his view, had been evident for some time.

“As head of the European Parliament delegation observing the elections, I witnessed links between the state, the ruling party and organized crime. I understand how long citizens have been protesting against corruption and the government, raising concerns that go to the very heart of Albania’s prospects for European integration,” Gahler wrote.
His comments add to those of prominent international voices supporting citizens’ concerns, while linking the country’s political and institutional crisis to state capture and a failure to respect democratic standards.
