Acting Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla held a meeting with representatives of the Kosovo Police, the Prosecutor’s Office, the Court and the Center for Social Work following the tragic murder of 25-year-old pregnant woman Jetlira Foniqi in the village of Kërvasari, Malisheva.

The meeting examined how institutional mechanisms had functioned and discussed measures that should be taken to prevent cases of violence.
Gërvalla said that such incidents require a fully accountable review of institutional action and maximum commitment to preventing them from happening again. According to her, every life lost obliges institutions to do more and to act much earlier, using every available means to prevent the next case.
She noted that preventing violence requires cooperation and accountability from all institutions. Citing data from the responsible institutions, Gërvalla said that the victim’s husband, Egzon Bytyqi, is suspected in the case, while there is no record of Jetlira Foniqi having previously been identified in any situation that could have signaled such a risk.
The acting minister stressed that all necessary steps must now be taken to fully clarify the case. She called on the competent authorities to investigate every circumstance and determine responsibility in accordance with the law, without leaving any aspect of the incident unexamined.
