A powerful fire at an elderly care home in Chile has killed 16 people.
The incident occurred on Friday evening in the municipality of Pitrufquén, part of the Araucanía Region, south of the capital Santiago.

Local authorities confirmed the death toll, while the Municipality of Pitrufquén expressed its condolences to the families of the elderly residents who lost their lives.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Immediately after the flames broke out, firefighters worked to extinguish them and restore the situation to normal.
According to the authorities, the fire was brought under control during the early hours of this morning.
