The visit to Tirana is part of a tour of four Balkan countries. Albania’s progress toward European integration is expected to be at the center of the talks.
During her stay in the capital, von der Leyen is expected to meet Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Bajram Begaj.
The European Commission president is also bringing a plan for a dedicated roadmap for Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Ukraine, aimed at supporting them on their path to European Union membership.
The plan sets out priority reforms, indicative timelines and targets for completing the stages of negotiations.
Attention is also expected to focus on October 6, when a review of pre-accession policy is expected to be presented, and October 15–16, when European Union leaders will discuss enlargement and internal reforms.
