Balliu: Parliament is being used for personal interests, appointment to head the Guard undermines national security

Democratic Party MP Klevis Balliu, speaking from the Presidency of Parliament, accused Albania’s legislative process of being entirely placed at the service of Prime Minister Edi Rama’s personal interests. He focused his statement on the Republican Guard, which he described as one of the most important links in national security.

Balliu said that for years, Guard personnel have faced low wages, a lack of support and difficult working conditions, to the point that many of them are forced to take a second job to support their families. According to him, the government has completely ignored these vital problems.

He said that instead of intervening to improve their working conditions and treatment, the majority has chosen to change the law. According to Balliu, with this move the criteria that the majority itself had previously set have been removed, with the sole aim of paving the way for the appointment of the person directly preferred by the head of government.

According to the Democratic MP, this is a dangerous precedent that amounts to a complete degradation of the rule of law.

Balliu also stressed that independent institutions are being treated as the private property of those in power and that national security is openly being put at the service of narrow interests.

In his assessment, this situation represents a fundamental threat to democracy, adding that the current government has crossed every line.
