Renowned Albanian actor Koço Qendro passed away today at the age of 99. Qendro was one of the most prominent names on the Albanian stage and screen, an actor who left his mark on the history of Albanian theater and cinema.
He was an artist of great stature and a respected citizen, who over the years conveyed precious artistic and human values. Born in Senicë, Delvinë, he took part in his youth as a partisan in the war in the Korçë district. In the early 1960s, he stood out as an actor with the Maliq Estrada and later joined the Korçë theater troupe, remaining devoted to the stage for decades. Through his roles and his unique performances, he gave Albanian theater and film unforgettable characters.

Throughout his career, Qendro portrayed a wide range of characters, both on stage and beyond, earning praise from critics. His distinguished performances include his role as Sir Enry Egidi in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the “AZ Çajupi” Theater in Korçë, under the direction of Pirro Mani. In this production, he demonstrated his ability to portray a variety of characters, from a harmless buffoon to a brave knight, a coward, and Olivia’s unfortunate lover.
Another important role was that of Harpagon in Molière’s opera “The Miser,” directed by Dhimitër Orgocka. [ 8 ] He performed this role twice, first in 1976 and again in 2005, nearly thirty years later, winning the “Best Actor” award at the “Apollon” festival in Fier.
Qendro also made a significant contribution to preserving the history of theater in the Korçë region, working with dedication to create the archive and museum hall dedicated to the local theatrical heritage. In recognition of his contributions both during the National Liberation War and on stage, he was honored with six medals and three orders, including the “Red Star” and “Naim Frashëri.”
