The family did not disclose the cause of death, but it is recalled that in 2022, Neill was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer, which he later managed to overcome.
The actor passed away in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his closest loved ones, according to family members.
“It is with great sadness that Sam Neill’s family announces his passing. He died accompanied by his relatives and left this world with the same dignity that defined his entire life. His departure was sudden, but we feel fortunate that he was free of cancer. We express our gratitude to the team at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital for their extraordinary care and ask that our privacy be respected during this difficult time,” the statement reads.
Immediately after the news, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the artist, highlighting his impact on both domestic and international cinema.
“Sam Neill brought to life so many beloved Australian stories and held a special place in the nation’s soul. He faced his illness with dignity, humor, and resilience. He will be deeply missed, and his memory will be everlasting. May he rest in peace,” Albanese said.
