Greek authorities have arrested a 26-year-old man over the death of Scottish national Elisabeth-Jane Ross, whose body was found stuffed inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens.

Greek police said the suspect is a foreign national. During questioning on Thursday, he admitted to killing the 38-year-old woman.
The suspect was identified after security camera footage was reviewed. Investigators believe he placed the victim’s body in the suitcase and then took it to the abandoned building where it was discovered.
The woman’s body was found on July 18 by a homeless man. Preliminary findings indicate that she had died five to seven days before the discovery. During that period, her mobile phone is suspected to have been used by someone to send messages in her name.
The victim was identified by authorities through her fingerprints. Elisabeth-Jane Ross, who is believed to have been from Edinburgh, had arrived in Greece on June 26 and initially stayed with friends in Piraeus.
The 38-year-old had later planned to meet some American friends in another part of Athens, but it is not known whether the meeting took place.
Investigators also suspect that the 26-year-old used the victim’s bank card to withdraw money in the days following her death.
During a search of the suspect’s home, police seized a handgun and a knife. He faces charges of murder, robbery and violations of weapons laws.
The UK Foreign Office said it is providing consular support to the victim’s family and remains in contact with the Greek authorities.
Police Scotland also confirmed that it had been informed of the case and is cooperating with authorities in Greece. Officers are also supporting Elisabeth-Jane Ross’s family.
