The eruptive activity of the Anak Krakatau volcano has caused significant disruption to air traffic in Indonesia. At Jakarta’s main international airport, 209 flights have been suspended.

On Sunday morning, volcanic ash was detected in the airspace near Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, affecting more than 22,000 passengers. The flights most affected were those to and from Singapore, but disruptions also involved other international routes, including Doha, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur. The suspension of operations lasted until 13:30.
Anak Krakatau showed intense activity late Friday. According to authorities, successive eruptions, seismic tremors, lava flows and powerful noises were recorded in the surrounding areas. Two more eruptions were also recorded early Sunday.
The volcano’s latest activity has not prompted a tsunami warning. However, volcanic ash has also created difficulties for residents living near the volcano. The Ministry of Health has urged citizens to stay indoors and wear masks to avoid irritation to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
Several schools have suspended activities after residents and students reported eye irritation. Because of the ash, fishermen have also suspended their trips out to sea.
Known as the “Child of Krakatoa,” Anak Krakatau is located in the Sunda Strait, between the islands of Java and Sumatra. It became particularly well known in December 2018, when the collapse of part of the volcano caused a tsunami that claimed the lives of more than 400 people.
