The first case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in Albania during 2026 has been identified in Korçë County. The Ministry of Health announced that it was detected during the second ten-day period of August, as part of the ongoing and intensive monitoring of this infection in the country.

Since January 2026, 30 samples from people suspected of having WNV infection have been analyzed, and all have tested negative. The recently detected case is the first confirmed case in the country this year.
Following confirmation, the Institute of Public Health continued epidemiological monitoring of people, as well as the epidemiological and entomological investigation of the case and surveillance of the situation nationwide.
West Nile virus has also been detected in Albania in previous years. During 2024, 107 confirmed cases and 50 probable cases were reported, while in 2025, two confirmed cases were registered.
