The victims have been identified as Hossam El-Hawas, his wife Zeina Alian, and their teenage daughter Sarah. The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. yesterday, at a time when the sea posed a danger because of strong waves.
The family’s other child, Shaja, was rescued alive from the water and continues to receive treatment, while her health condition remains critical.
The Palestinian Embassy announced that El-Hawas had come to Britain from a refugee camp in Lebanon. The Palestinian Forum in Britain said the family originally came from the Rashidiya refugee camp.
According to reports by the Daily Mail, the family had set up camp near Shoreham Port and had been staying there for several weeks. On Tuesday, all four family members went into the sea to swim, but they soon found themselves in a dangerous situation.
Several witnesses have said the incident may have been caused after one of the children became caught in a fishing net. This account is based solely on witness testimony and has not yet been confirmed by the authorities.
