The incident occurred on August 15, while the information was made public by the British Bases only after the autopsy had been completed.
According to the information available so far, the young man was on a catamaran sailing near the shore when his phone fell into the sea. He entered the water to retrieve it, and a 27-year-old man from Jordan then dived in after him.
Both men were found unconscious by the catamaran’s passengers and officers from the British Bases Police, who arrived at the scene after an emergency call. First aid was administered to the two young men. The Jordanian regained consciousness and was rescued, while the Egyptian was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The autopsy conducted yesterday determined that the cause of death was drowning. Samples were taken from the body for toxicological examinations and other laboratory tests.
The investigation into the full circumstances of the incident is being conducted by the British Bases Police, as the Lady’s Mile area falls under the jurisdiction of the Akrotiri Base. The authorities have also begun communicating with the Egyptian Embassy regarding procedures related to the 27-year-old’s body.
