According to the investigation, Storer headed to the security office at around 1:45 a.m. The 63-year-old guard, identified as Dyer, was taking his shift break there.
Police suspect that the 20-year-old forced his way into the office and violently attacked the guard, also using a large water container with a capacity of approximately 19 liters. Dyer died from his injuries.
One of the victim’s colleagues said he was a much-loved person who was respected by others.
“He was a wonderful person. He was just sitting at his desk eating a cheeseburger during his break,” the colleague said. He also said that Dyer was married and that his wife worked at a restaurant in the area.
After the incident, Storer is suspected of leaving the resort unnoticed. Approximately two hours later, local residents called police several times to report that a naked man was wandering through a neighborhood near the resort.
Witnesses said the young man was continuously shouting religious phrases.
One local resident recounted: “I heard a man shouting, ‘Jesus loves you. Jesus is me. I am Jesus.’ He kept repeating it over and over, perhaps 15 times.”
Officers located Storer with scratches on his body, after which he was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
At around 5:30 a.m., authorities discovered the security guard’s lifeless body in the resort office.
Police said the 20-year-old’s alleged connection to the killing emerged after security camera footage was reviewed. The footage is believed to show his movements around the resort, as well as the moment he entered the office where the victim was located.
Legend Storer is a student and athlete at Concordia University Irvine in California and is now facing serious charges.
The 20-year-old is charged with second-degree murder, burglary with a dangerous object, and indecent exposure.
During his first court appearance, Storer pleaded not guilty. His request for bail was denied, and he remains in custody at the Maui Community Correctional Center. Investigators are still working to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident.
