Two fire fronts remain active across a total perimeter of around 4 kilometers. Firefighters’ efforts and the movement of vehicles close to the flames are being severely hampered by the difficult terrain and dense vegetation.
Authorities said that three fire outbreaks were also detected in the same area about a week ago, heightening concerns over a recurrence of the situation.
The entire firefighting service of the Gjirokastër Fire Protection and Rescue Directorate has been deployed in the operation. Crews on the ground are working to extinguish the flames while keeping the situation under surveillance.
Additional firefighting teams, volunteer firefighters and Armed Forces troops are expected to arrive to reinforce the operation and join efforts to bring the fire under control.
The situation remains serious and is constantly changing, while crews are working to stop the flames from spreading and protect residential areas near the active fire fronts.
