Speaking at a press conference after the suspension of the constitutive session of the Assembly of Kosovo, Kurti responded to the LDK, which had rejected the position of Assembly speaker. He recalled that the position of speaker was considered very important last year.
Kurti said that in 2025, the election of the Assembly speaker had dragged on for months. According to him, Albulena Haxhiu secured 57 votes, but that number was not enough for her election. He stressed that the importance of institutional posts should not be determined by the year or season, but by what is stipulated in the Constitution and the law.
“Every position, in my view, is valuable and important, although the responsibilities differ. In 2025, it took months to elect the Assembly speaker, and you will recall that Albulena Haxhiu received 57 votes, which were not enough. So, last year, the Assembly speaker was of great importance. I do not believe that the weight of institutional positions changes according to the year or season more than it does according to the provisions of the Constitution and the law,” Kurti said.
He added that the Vetëvendosje Movement had made a major concession in the spring of this year when it withdrew the presidential candidacies of Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kollçaku. Meanwhile, according to Kurti, the LDK had asked for all issues to be included in the discussions.
The acting prime minister insisted that political talks on the presidency should be given a chance so that the country can avoid new elections. According to him, the president should be a consensus figure with a well-known character, values, and contributions to society.
“In the spring of this year, VV made a major concession by withdrawing Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kollçaku from the presidential race. We made this concession, while the LDK asked us to discuss everything. For this reason, if we want to avoid new elections, we must allow room for discussions and for reaching a political agreement on the president. This must be a consensus figure with a well-known character, values, and contributions to society, their respective profession, and our beloved Kosovo,” Kurti said.
