Macabre Case in Greece: 55-Year-Old Kept Father’s Body in Freezer for Around 2.5 Years, What He Told Investigators

Public opinion in Greece has been shocked by a macabre case uncovered in Mystras.

A 55-year-old man is suspected of keeping the body of his deceased father in a freezer for around 2.5 years so that he could continue collecting both his father’s pension and that of his late mother.

The case came to light after authorities in Laconia were informed that the 90-year-old, who was born in 1936, had not been seen for a long time.

During the investigation, police contacted his 55-year-old son, who claimed that his father had moved away and was living in Athens.

Investigators checked the veracity of this claim by contacting the 55-year-old’s sister, who lives in Athens. She told the authorities that she had not seen her father for years and that he had been living with her brother.

The resulting suspicions led police to a hotel owned by the 55-year-old. The search was conducted in the presence of a prosecutor, while the property, which was closed, was being used by the suspect as his residence.

In the hotel’s basement, officers discovered the 90-year-old’s body inside a freezer. An air gun was also found and seized during the search.

Following the discovery, the 55-year-old was arrested. During questioning, he allegedly admitted what he had done, stating that his father had died of natural causes around two and a half years earlier.

According to his testimony, he had hidden the body in the freezer so that he could continue collecting his father’s pension. He said he had also been collecting his late mother’s pension, which, after her death, had passed to her husband, the arrested man’s 90-year-old father, as the beneficiary.

A forensic pathologist and a team from the Sparta Criminal Investigation Office attended the scene. An autopsy of the body has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The 55-year-old has been charged with making false statements, repeated fraud and violating weapons legislation. He is expected to appear before a prosecutor, while the relevant authorities continue their investigation.
