Emmanuel Macron is expected to hold a crisis meeting with the government cabinet this Monday as major wildfires in southwestern France advance toward Bordeaux.

The fire is about 15 kilometers from the city, which has a population of nearly 850,000. Authorities have warned that the situation could worsen due to another heatwave, during which temperatures are forecast to reach 40 degrees Celsius.
More than 220,000 people have so far been evacuated from areas near Bordeaux. According to the French interior minister, the flames are changing direction unpredictably and conditions remain “very unfavorable.” Despite the danger, no order has yet been issued to evacuate residents from the city.
The National Federation of Firefighters said the fire in Gironde has caused an unusual phenomenon known as a “pyrocumulonimbus.” This is a massive storm generated by the flames themselves that produces winds and lightning, making it significantly more difficult to bring the fire under control. Fire service spokesman Eric Brocardi said: “The fire line is constantly shifting. Confronting it directly is impossible. It is like David’s battle against Goliath.”
Since the start of the year, fires in France have burned approximately 98,000 hectares. More than 42,000 hectares have been scorched in the southwestern region alone, where the country is battling one of its largest wildfires since World War II.
A severe situation has also been reported in Spain. A new fire near Valencia has led to the evacuation of around 15,000 residents, while the total number of people evacuated from areas around Madrid and Ávila has exceeded 90,000.
Spanish authorities say the flames have engulfed around 77,000 hectares of land this year. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned that Spain faces “difficult hours” and called for greater efforts to tackle the climate emergency.
