Russia’s state atomic energy agency Rosatom confirmed on Tuesday that the chief engineer of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under Moscow’s administration, was killed following a drone strike near the facility.

According to a statement by Rosatom chief Alexei Likhachev, an unmanned aerial vehicle operated by Ukrainian forces struck a staff vehicle travelling on the route between the plant and the city of Enerhodar. Alexander Yakovlev, the chief engineer, and the driver were killed in the incident.

Russian authorities blamed Ukraine for the incident, while Kyiv has not yet publicly responded to the accusation.

Just days earlier, on Friday, Kremlin officials accused Kyiv of increasing what they described as “terrorist” activity targeting the power plant. Russian forces took control of the nuclear facility in March 2022, at the start of the large-scale military offensive in Ukraine.
